Growth Scan

Growth Scan: Monitoring Your Baby’s Development in the Third Trimester

A growth scan is an important ultrasound examination performed during the third trimester of pregnancy. This scan helps doctors monitor the baby’s growth, evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid, and assess how well the placenta is functioning.

The growth scan provides valuable information about the baby’s overall health and development during the later stages of pregnancy. It can help detect conditions such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or excessive fetal growth, which may require additional monitoring or medical care.

By closely observing the baby’s size and development, the scan helps doctors determine whether the pregnancy is progressing normally and assists in planning the safest approach for delivery if any concerns arise.

Why is a Growth Scan Performed?

Growth scans are recommended to ensure the baby is developing normally during the final stages of pregnancy.

Growth Scan Ultrasound in Pregnancy

Monitoring Fetal Growth: The scan measures the baby's size and growth pattern. This is especially important if the mother has conditions such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or previous pregnancy complications.

Checking Amniotic Fluid Levels: The amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is assessed to ensure the baby has a healthy environment for development.

Detecting Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR): If the baby is not growing at the expected rate, the scan can help identify fetal growth restriction and guide further monitoring.

Assessing the Placenta: The scan evaluates how well the placenta is supplying nutrients and oxygen to the baby.

Planning for Delivery: If the baby’s growth is significantly smaller or larger than expected, doctors may adjust the delivery plan to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

What to Expect During a Growth Scan

Preparation: Usually, no special preparation is required before a growth scan.

The Procedure: During the scan, a sonographer moves a handheld ultrasound probe across the abdomen to capture images of the baby. Measurements are taken of the baby's head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length to evaluate growth.

Duration: The examination generally takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the baby's position and the number of measurements required.

After the Growth Scan

Once the scan is completed, your doctor will review the results and discuss them with you. In most cases, the results confirm that the baby is growing normally.

If the baby’s growth is slower or faster than expected, your doctor may recommend additional monitoring, further ultrasound scans, or other tests to ensure the baby's well-being.
